Greetings from the Stanley H. King Institute team.
Twice each summer since 1963, we gather with talented, dedicated, compassionate
independent school educators to practice the art of deep listening. The Institute’s
mission arises from an understanding that students — as is true
for all of us — need to feel connected in order to learn, to grow,
to thrive. Deep listening helps us remember our larger purpose of offering
connection to our students as well as to others in our lives.
Adolescence has always been an unstable, anxious, and fruitful
time. How do we as adults in the lives of our students provide the warmth
and connection that stabilizes the wobble, manages the anxiety, and invites
forth the fruits of self-understanding? We see our students;
we show up to witness their felt experience; we listen. We hold up a
mirror that helps students recognize, comprehend, and move forward with
a deepened sense of belonging and mattering. When a student
feels a healthy connection with a caring adult, a sense of motivation,
true belonging, and new-found access to inner resources naturally follows. And,
often to the surprise of the adult that is listening deeply, their
own motivation and sense of belonging deepens as well.
The week at the Institute is practical, meaningful, and (dare we say
it?) fun. We hope you join us next summer.
